1. engine won't start. 2. All you get is a click when you turn the key. (make sure that you have a good battery) 3. You hear a whirring sound but the engine does not crank. (the starter motor turns but the bendix does not engauge. 4. You hear this gosh awful screaming sound. (the starter spins but does not engauge the flywheel completely.) Probably a lot more but these have happened to me over the years. You can take the starter off (if you are mechanically inclined) and some auto parts stores will test them for you. Auto Zone does where I live.
before you change your starter there are 2 wires on it the battery cable thick one and a plug in wire 70% of the time this connection is bad because the starter is in the the front exposed to rain water unplug it spray with electrical contact cleaner and clean blade connector on starter. be sure to pull negative battery off so you dont short anything g
I just had my battery changed and since I had it changed, I have had slight problems with my van starting, I went out and tried starting it and I got a clicking sound, does this mean the battery I received was a faulty one, or icould it be the starter, it did start with a good jump.
If it started with a jump start then the starter would seem to be ok. Check the condition of the battery and alternator. Test them with a digital DC volt meter engine not running. A fully charged battery will read 12.6 volts. It will read 12.4 volts when it is only 75% charged. It will read 12.2 volts at 50% charge and 12.0 volts a 25% charge. If the battery is not fully charge then suspect the alternator is the problem. Start the engine and check the voltage at the battery posts. A good alternator will put out 13.5 to 15.5 volts with the engine running at idle. If you find the alternator seems to be good, then drive to wherever you bought this battery and have them check your charging system and the battery. Or if you do not own a digital volt meter then just driver there and let them check it out. Most will do it for free.
clicking.(click. click. click.) not a continuous click, one click for every turn of the key. If it continue to click rapidly on one turn of the key it's your battery. T.S
The starter will not rotate the flywheel, grinding sound when starter engages, slow revolution of starter motor. Loud humming from starter motor.
Yes
Bad starter is easy: when you turn the car on provided your battery is good, you will hear a click in the engine compartment, but the car will not start.
check starter connection,if 12 volts there probably bad starter
No electrial spark or fire at the plugs.
bad starter or bad connection to starter or bad ground on battery or starter
I had a similar problem turns out the Alternator was bad.
Probably
It is mounted on the starter motor itself. When you get another starter, it will have the solenoid mounted on it already. If it is bad, just replace the starter, I would not change just the solenoid.
Bad neutral or clutch safety switch? Bad starter? bad starter solenoid?
Typically, when the solenoid fails the starter is right behind. If you know how you could replace the solenoid, put in brushes and bushings and the starter MIGHT be ok if nothing bad has happened to the armature.
Bad halogen bulb
A bad engine temp sensor can do that.
There are several reasons why a 1999 Blazer S10 may not turn over. Some reasons could be bad spark plugs, dead battery, or even a bad starter. A mechanic will be able to determine the cause.
You can tell a bad valve by doing a compression test.
The starter solenoid is bad.
There are a number of signs that become apparent when an ECM computer on a 1990 Chevy is going bad. The top signs include a non-functioning speedometer and flashing codes on the dash.
Seized engine? Loose or corroded battery cables? Weak or dead battery? Bad starter solenoid? Bad starter? Bad clutch or neutral safety switch? Bad ignition switch?
Make sure the solonoid is bad first.. It is on top of the starter and the starter has to be removed to replace it.
