What are the symptoms of a bad timing belt?

Answer:
It is very hard to reset the timing (that's why you pay someone to do it). Although, it just means rotating by hand, everything must align "perfectly" or performance will suffer.

I was told it could cause valve damage when breaking. Only on "interference" engines.

If the engine is non-interference, which it should be. Then, you will not damage anything if timing belt breaks. You simply need to pay for a new one to be put on. Also, the timing belt should last 105,000 miles.

Other symptoms may include engine vibration sometimes bad enough to set a knock sensor code. Some owners have even reported a noisy distributor. NOTE: There was only a couple model years that used the non-interference fit engine and they where the Nissan Quest. It would be safer to consider all engines interference fit. When having the timing belt replaced, the water pump, belt tensioner, thermostat and camshaft seals should also be replaced as these require just as much labor to replace later.
