It's if you've stepped or landed hard on your foot and caused it to sort of twist underneath you. Nothing is broken, but it's pulled hard on the tendons and the parts of the joint. There's usually swelling, and tenderness and there might be some discoloration. With some rest and the use of a supporting bandage it's usually OK after a few days.

Wrap it with an elastic bandage to support it and keep it from moving. Apply ice every 30 minutes for 10-15 minutes at a time. Take an NSAID for pain if needed (ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin).

It's a wrist that was injured, often with a twisting motion, and has tears in the muscles, ligaments, and/or tendons of varying degrees.

Carpal means pertaining to the wrist, so "carpal sprain" could be used to refer to a wrist sprain, but typically the lay term is used in medical documents.
