The symptoms are fairly similar across the affected species (pigs, sheep, goats, cattle): vesicles/blisters/ulcers in the oral cavity and around the coronary band just above the keratinaceous hoof; affected animals typically have a moderate fever, decreased feed and water consumption, and signs of general malaise (lethargy, mental dullness, decreased reaction to external stimuli). In a naive population, infection rates will approach 100%, although mortality rates tend to be less than 5%.
