Herpes simplex I and II have the same symptoms. The chief difference is that Type I recurs less often. Symptom include an itching, tingling, numb, or burning sensation followed closely by blisters, which may turn white and then erode to leave small ulcers. Typically, these bumps are smaller than pimples and are painful, although someone who's had the infection for a while, or has had the other type of herpes for a while, may have few symptoms and may not even notice an outbreak.

During an initial outbreak in someone without a history of either kind of herpes, there may also be fatigue, body aches, and low-grade fever.

It's important to get tested as soon as possible if you believe you are having a herpes outbreak. It's difficult to confirm the infection after the lesions have started to heal.

There really isn't any long term affects from herpes, in fact most people experience milder symptoms / break outs over time. Herpes doesn't affect fertility or reproductive systems. All it does is cause annoying sores or blisters on the genitals along with some uncomfortable or pain full symptoms.

Are cold sores cause by bacteria or virus?

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump ahead of yourself. There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2." Type 1 herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 1 ("HSV1") generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases. Type 2 herpes simplex virus. Herpes simplex virus type 2 ("HSV2") usually only infects those body tissues that lie "below the waistline" and it is this virus that is also known as "genital herpes."
