What rituals are there in the Sikh religon?

The prime goal of man is to destroy the cycle of birth and rebirth and be united with God. This can be done by following the teachings of the Guru, meditation and service. If a person overcomes the Five Cardinal Vices he will be saved.

Five Cardinal Vices:

1. Ego
2. Lust
3. Greed
4. Attachment
5. Anger

Each one links into the other, Sikhs believe these are the things which makes a persons life unhappy. If they can control these by meditating and praying, they'll live happily. No one can actually get rid of these. The Sikhs call them the Punj Chor(5 thieves).

The Three Pillars of Sikhism were formalised by Guru Nanak as: # The Guru led the Sikhs directly to practise Simran and Naam Japna-meditation on God and reciting and chanting of God's Name-Waheguru. The Sikh is to recite the Nitnem banis daily in remembrance of the grace and kirpa of the Almighty. # He asked the Sikhs to live as householders and practise Kirat Karni: to honestly earn by one's physical and mental effort, while accepting God's gifts and blessing. One is to speak the truth at all times and only fear God. Live a life of decency, high moral values and spirituality. # The Sikhs were asked to share their wealth within the community by practising Vaṇḍ Chakkō-"Share and Consume together". The community or Sadh Sangat is an important part of Sikhism. One must be part of a community that is pursuing the values set out by the Sikh Gurus and every Sikh has to give in whatever way possible to the community. This spirit of Giving is an important message from Guru Nanak.

Three Tenets of the Sikh Faith

Sikhism has its beginnings in northern Panjab in the late 15th Century. Nanak Dev, the first guru, born to a Hindu family, showed a deep spiritual nature from early childhood. As he matured and became absorbed in meditation, he questioned rituals, idolatry and the rigidity of the Caste System. His closest companion, a minstrel named Mardana, came from a Muslim family. They traveled together extensively for more than 12 years. Nanak sang hymns he composed in devotion of one God. Mardana accompanied him by playing the Rabab, a stringed instrument. They developed and taught three fundamental principles:

· Naam japna, remembering God through meditation.

· Kirat karo, earning an honest living.

· Vand chakko, selflessly serving others, sharing income and resources.
