What are the technical details of a modem?

Answer

Hmm, the question is very broad to answer in two or three lines, but it is better to anwser two lines than to leave it out ;) So , modem is basicaly short name for MODULATOR - DEMODULATOR, which basically means that all data you send through it will be transformed into sound send through telephone line (modulator part), and on the other side demodulator part will transform sound back into data. Other things about modem: First modems used speed of 300 bps, then progressed to 1200 - 2400 bps 14400 28800 33600 and 56000 (which is theoretical maximum, ((this limit is more because of telphone lines than modem itself). Most modem use a standard set of AT commands (HAYES STANDARD). eg. ATDT555555 (dial number 555555 in tone mode) atdp555555 (dial number in pulse mode), atx3 (ignore dial tone) atz (reset to default configuration ) etc etc (this commands are typed in command mode in some terminal program. (hyperterm for example.)
