The three stages of aerobic cellular respiration are:

Glycolysis, which takes place in the cytoplasm of the cell.

The Krebs Cycle, which takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria.

The Electron Transport Chain, which takes place in the inner membrane of the mitochondria.

Glycolysis (phase 1) takes place in the mitochondria ; the Krebs cycle, or citric acid cycle (phase 2), takes place throughout the mitochondrion, and electron transport phosphorylation takes place in the inner membrane of the cytoplasm, in the folds known as the cristae.

1. Glycolysis: takes place in the cytosol of the cell.

2. Citric Acid Cycle (a.k.a. Calvin Cycle): takes place in the matrix of the mitochondria

3. Electron Transport Chain: takes place in the inner membrane of the mitochondria...For prokaryotes (which do not have mitochondria) it will take place in the plasma membrane.

The first stage of cellular respiration, Glycolysis, occurs in the cytoplasm.

The second stage, the Citric Acid Cycle occurs in the matrix (space inside the inner membrane) of the mitochondria.

The last stage, the Electron Transport Chain, occur in the cristae (compartments formed by the inner membrane) of the mitochondria.

The first stage of cellular respiration is Glycolysis - which occurs in the cytoplasm. This involves the breakdown of glucose into 2 pyruvate molecules.

The second stage is the Citric Acid Cycle (also known as the Krebs Cycle or the TCA Cycle) occurs in the mitochondria. This involves many different conversions, and results in 1 GTP (or ATP), 3 NADH and 1 FADH.

The third stage is the electron transport chain (or oxidative phosphorylation), which also occurs in the mitochondria. This uses the products of the Citric Acid Cycle (NADH and FAH) to produce ATP.
