Best Answer

Metallic Minerals (they were once refined and known as metals ex, gold, silver, copper, etc.)

Fossil Fuels ( are used for energy production ex, coal, oil and gas)

Industrial Minerals (everything else that is mined that is NOT metallic or a fossil fuel, many different types and uses, ex, asbestos)

Minerals are grouped by their chemical composition. There are more than 3 groups of minerals including. Silicates, oxides, sulfates, sulfides, carbonates, native elements, and halides are all major mineral groups. Silicates are definitely at the top of the list.

scientists classify minerals based on their composition, they therefor have come up with the basic groups:

silicates: silicon-oxygen combine to form a structure called silicon-oxygen tetrahedrons, which consist of one silicon atom and four oxygen atoms. Most silicates contain 1+ other elements (pure quarts)

carbonates: minerals that contain the elements carbon, oxygen, and one or more other metallic elements.

oxides:minerals that contain oxygen and one or more other elements, usually in which are metals. (rutile, corundum, hematite)

sulfates and sulfides: minerals that contain the element sulfur (anhydrite, gypsum)

haildes:minerals that contain a halogen ion plus one or more other elements(chlorine, fluorite)

native elements: minerals that only contain one element or type of atom (copper, sulfur, silver, gold)

Minerals and gemstones are classified according to their chemical makeup. The Minerals Classes are: 1 - Elements, 2 - Sulfides, 3 - Halides, 4 - Oxides and Hydroxides, 5 - Nitrates, Carbonates, Borates, 6 - Sulfates, 7 - Phosphates, Arsenates, Vanadates, 8 - Silicates and 9 - Non-minerals.

add Given that you ask for three, do you ask after rock types, e.g. Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic.
Carbonates Oxides Halides
