What are the towing capacity of small cars Is there some having a towing capacity of 1500 pounds or more? |
Answer
Most small cars have a towing capacity of 1000lbs.
The only* small (EPA-classed compact) car I am aware of that has a higher towing capacity is the 2003+ Saab 93. This has a towing capacity of 3500lbs with trailer brakes.
Some models of the Toyota Camry and the Ford Taurus have a 2000lbs towing capacity but these are in the EPA midsize class.
The Hyundai Elantra 2003 is pretty small gets 30mpg highway and has a tow rating of 1875 if the trailer is equipped with brakes.
-Most Subarus can tow 200lbs, including the WRX. My Prism/Corolla says it will tow 1500, but I dont know if I would recomend it.
*Edit: If you're looking for something very economical, Hyundai (and Kia, now that most of their cars are actually built on the same chassis) can offer the Elantra, with 2003+ models having a 3000lb capacity and the newest models having 3500-4000, IIRC. This is where I first discovered this fact: http://www.edmunds.com/reviews/list/top10/102426/article.html
The Elantra GT from 2003-2007 is a nice hatch with good towing. Check it out.
