The main purposes of the respiratory system is to bring nutrients to the body, as well as, remove toxic from the body. Air high in oxygen enters the body and goes to the lungs. Here it interacts with the circulatory system and the "clean" air gets traded with the air high in carbon dioxide.

The respiratory system takes in oxygen for the body's use. The lungs (aveoli) exchange O2 for carbon dioxide (O2) to rid the body of this damaging, life-threatening gas. And the respiratory system helps to keep acid-base levels in the body balanced, as well as cool the body and keep the body's temperature in balance.

The respiratory system pulls carbon dioxide from the blood to expel it from the body. In turn, the lungs pull in oxygen to be used by brain and body. As well, the respiratory system plays a role in fluid loss and in cooling of the body or temperature regulation.
