Ocean water is a complex mixture of substances, the two most common being water, of course, and common salt (sodium chloride). Waer is a covalent substance and only splits into ions to a very small degree. Sodium chloride, however, is an ionic substance and splits into two ions, sodium ions (Na+) and choride ions (Cl-). So these two iions are the most common.
The first is Chloride, and the second is Sodium.
Sodium ion and Magnesium
chloride and sodium
Tap water may contain multiple ions and minerals. A common ion found in water are fluorides, which is added to benefit dental health.
If the water is pure, it will contain H3O+ ions and OH- ions. They are hydronium ions and hydroxyl ions.
The four MAIN IONS in seawater in descending order of abundance are: CI: Chloride Na: Sodium SO4: Sulfate Mg: magnesium Found in Leckie-Yuretich: Investigating the Ocean, Page 114, Seawater Salinity: The salt of the Ocean
There are several things in ocean water.Mainly found water. Then there are ions like Na,Cl,Mg,Ba,Sulphates,Br etc...Also there are micro organisms, organic materials according to pollution.
This question depends on what importance is being assigned. The most common dissolved ions (elemental atoms do not dissolve) are sodium and chloride, but they are many other important elements found in sea water.
A solution of Na+(sodium ions) and Cl-(chlorine ions) in water is brine.
hydrogen and oxygen ions and some times impurities
The main difference between distilled and bottle water is the ions and minerals found in them. In distilled water, no ions nor minerals can be found while in bottled water such elements are present. The taste is also different due to the ions present (or absent in the case of distilled water) in the water. !!
Oxygen (in Oxide ions)
OH- and H+
I will explain this using the example NaCl, which is just common salt. When water is added to NaCl it dissolves until the solution is saturated. That is, where no more salt can be held in the current volume of water. The H+ and OH- ions present in the water (H2O) bombard the ionic lattice structure of NaCl where each Na+ ion is electrostatically attracted to Cl- ions. The bombarding ions are the H+ ions just to clarify. This ruins the electro static attraction between the Na+ and the Cl- ions. Therefore they diffuse in the solution along with the H+ ions and the OH- ions. This is actually brine;sea water. Reccomend me if you found this useful :)
