Laptops: Portable, but slower and smaller screen. Good for students and frequent travelers.
Desktops: Stationary, but faster and you can get any screen size. Good for businesses, gaming, and at-home use.
Servers: Extremely fast, but useless to most people
Price:
Entry-level/budget: Fairly slow, good for word processing, email, music, online video, and online games.
Mid-road: Good speed, can handle most 2d and some 3d gaming, HD video, and basic video editing
Professional/gamer: Great speed, can handle all games, all video, and video editing and 3D rendering.
If you're still not sure, I'd get a Dell Inspiron desktop or laptop if you want Windows (or linux), or a MacBook air or 21 inch iMac if you want a Mac. If you are new to computers and have enough money for it, I'd get a Mac. If you have used computers a bit, you would know which one you prefer or are familiar with, they both have their pros (Macs work better, but Windows has the majority of popular software).
