The four types of prints are intaglio, relief, planographic, and monoprint.

  1. Intaglio prints are made by cutting into the matrix (printing plate), inking the plate, and wiping it clean so that only the recesses hold ink. Veils of ink intentionally left are referred to as plate tones.
  2. Relief prints are probably the most common and made by cutting into the plate and avoiding the recesses when inking.
  3. Planographic prints are made by use of principles of chemistry to differentiate the printing areas and the design field. This technique is called lithography, the name most commonly associated with this type of printing.
  4. Monoprints are created by drawing with ink on glass and then pressing your paper into the still wet ink. Only one print can be made.

What is the importance of printmaking?

Printmaking is an indirect means of creating art by transferring an image or design by contact with a matrix such as a block, plate, stone, or screen. There are many different types of printmaking, just as there are many types of paints An artist chooses the medium based on the effect he/she is looking to achieve. Printmaking is considered an original art form because it is done completely by hand. The basic idea behind the printmaking processes is the ability to make more than one of a specific image in a limited edition. The artist will use some sort of stencil or plate to layer blocks of color on top of one another. The nature of printmaking requires that the entire edition be printed simultaneously because the artist must print one color at a time on each piece of paper. In some types of printmaking, the plates themselves have a limited lifetime and all plates must be destroyed after the entire edition is completed.

What is difference between photography and printmaking?

Photography is the process by which photographs are created. A camera is used. The images may then be printed. Printmaking is another art form (although, unlike photography, it is strictly an art form). In printmaking, an image is carved into a surface. Ink is applied and the image of the carving is then printed. Printmaking is actually the process - not just how you distribute the product.
