However, this commandment is still very significant today. For, rather than putting God first in our lives, the commandment warns us not to put other things first as our gods.
These include the love of money, riches and wealth. They include fame for fame's sake. They include the pursuit of power. They include material possessions.
A fast car is a nice thing to have. Nothing wrong in that. But the obsession with that car, polishing it, cleaning it, and being very proud of it turns that machine into a 'god' that is worshipped, at the expense of other things - including God.
So any object, person, idea or circumstance that takes control of our lives and pushes God out of it is what this commandment is about. We should put God first in out lives and everything else second. Only then will we be able to put things into real perspective.
