If they weren't always there it is probably ICK. You need to go to a pet store and get a treatment to put in the water. It will spread to all of the fish and it can be deadly. You will need to empty the aquarium, clean it, and treat the fresh water. Good luck because once it gets so bad it is almost impossible to get rid of it. The white bumps are an indicator of ick (Ichthyophthirius multifilis) but the red bumps are usually the first sign of a bacterial infection that is known to cause ulcers to form. You may need to treat for both simultaneously if you want to save the fish. An easy way to do this is to feed the fish an antibacterial food while treating for ick with copper or formalin (or whatever you choose) this is usually one of the safest ways to double up medications without running the risk of overdosing. I have found that in treating fish for any type of parasites (including ick) it helps to raise the tanks salt concentration to 0.3%, and when treating ick specifically its also recommended to raise the tanks temperature to about 80 F (26.67 C), this speeds up the parasites life cycle and causes them to die faster.

If the white patches look like natural colouring of the scales then that is simply the colouring of the fish. If on the otherhand the white marks look like damage or fluff then you (and your fish) have a fungus problem. The treatment for fungus is first prepare a small container say it holds 1 gallon. Then add 1 servingspoon of cooking or sea salt to a cup and disolve it in water. Tip this into the treatment tank and then add the fish. Keep an eye on the fish during treatment. If it shows signs of distress then replace some of the salty water with fresh. While the fish is in the treatment container, syphon out the mulm/muck from the floor of the aquarium and while doing so remove and replace most of the water. When replacing the water add 1 teaspoon of sea salt/cooking salt per gallon. After about half an hour in the treatment container the fish can be returned to the main tank again. This treatment should be continued daily until you can see the fish is better and the marks have gone.

I haverecently bought a goldfish and i received a booklet with it when i bought it. It says that the white spots could lead to death. It also says you should go to your local aquarium and buy some fish safe medicine. This doesn't cost a lot. Below is a list of the other illnesses that can lead to death.

Skin Flukes: burrow below the fishes skin.

Cloudy Eyes: This appears as a white film over the eye.

Mouth Fungus: A white growth around the mouth.

Gill Flukes: These attach themselves to the fish's gill and may cause gasping and 'flashing'.

Dropsy: The goldfish's scales protrude due to accumulated fluid.

if you see any of the above please tell an aquarium.

If they are raised, pimple like lumps, then your fish probably has skin ulcers. These are usually caused by bad water conditions which is due to insufficient filtration and lack of water changes. My Advice is for you to do a water change ASAP and then stick to the basic rules of fishkeeping. The rules are :- 1 inch of fish needs at least 1 gallon of water. :- Every tank needs to have a permanently running cycled filter. :- Every tank needs at least 50% of its water replaced every week. Keep to the above rules and your fish will stand a chance of survival. Fail in any and I can guarantee that your fish will have constant health problems and will live a shortened life span.

Red spots on goldfish usually indicate the beginning of the formation of ulcers. They were probably caused by flukes (parasitic flatworm) which means you'll have to treat for parasites. The easiest way to eliminate the problem of ulcers is to start the fish on an antibiotic food, add an antiparasitic medication to the tank water, and to raise the salt concentration to 0.3%. The antibiotic food will take care of the ulcers, the antiparasitic will kill off the parasites that are leading to the ulcers- salt will also help kill off the parasites.

How can you tell that a fan tail goldfish is male or female?

No. The only way to tell the difference between male and female goldfish visually is to observe them when they are in breeding season/condition. At this time the male fish develop white spots on their gill plates and pectoral fins. The females simply get more chubby as they fill up with ova (eggs)
