Scale of the atom. While an atom is tiny, the nucleus is ten thousand times smaller than the atom and the quarks and electrons are at least ten thousand times smaller than that. * particleadventure.org/frameless/scale.html Answer Yes. The atom consists of a central nucleus surrounded by electrons. The nucleus is made up of of protons and neutrons and possibly much smaller particles as well.

Electrons have a mass of only 1/1836 of that of the proton ( ie 1836 electrons have the mass of a proton. There are 92 protons in the nucleus of a Uranium aton.

a molecule ------ INCORRECT Obviously, the person who gave this answer never completed 8th grade science class (not to be derogatory). The components of most atoms are electrons, neutrons, and protons. Elecrons, which are negatively charged, revolve around the positively charged nucleus of the atom, made up of protons and/or neutrons. Not being a nuclear physicist, I can't remember whether all atoms have both protons and neutrons in there nucleus, but all atoms have at least one electron, i.e., helium, which I believe has only one, having the smallest, lightest atomic weight of all the elements, thus making it the first element in the Periodic Table, which is arranged in order of the atomic weigt of all the elements. The way atoms form bonds together to become molecules is by sharing what is called valence eletrons, an electron common to each atom that bonds with other like atoms to form an often quite unbreakable bond. Breaking this bond can result in extreme power being released, as in an explosion caused by TNT (trinitrotoluene) or other "triple nitrate" molecular bonds. So, the answer that a molecule is smaller than an atom is correct, except in the opposite sense - it is a different size, only in the other direction, so the poster is at least partly right. ---------------- There are many types of particles smaller than an atom (collectively called subatomic particles). These include the conventional nucleons (protons and neutrons) and electrons, but also exotic ones such as neutrinos and muons. Some of these subatomic particles, such as electrons and neutrinos, are 'elementary', meaning they are fundamental particles that cannot be broken down into any other particles. Other subatomic particles, such as protons and neutrons, are not elementary and are composed of elementary particles called 'quarks'.

yes, there are the particles that make up the nucleus, the proton and neutron. Smaller than them is the electron which orbits the nucleus. Then there are quarks, which make up protons and neutrons.

Protons, Neutrons, Electrons, and quarks.

Improved: Yes, atoms are made of 2 molecules so molecules would be the smaller of the two. But smallest known to man is Quarks - the smallest matter.

always...wt hell...scientists do not have the right equipment to see anything smaller just yet but wait a few years i might come up with a super microniscope..lol
