1.Horizon A or Top soil (with humus)

2.Horizon B or Sub soil(sand ,silt and clay)

3.Horizon C or Weathered rock

4.Horizon D or Bedrock.

With the associated link and my telling you that the three "layers" your instructor is probably seeking are the A, B and C horizons, you can describe the "three" layers of a soil profile.

(BTW, it is not unusual to have more than three horizons.)
