You must be kidding. D means go forward, R means back up, and P means park. N is neutral, and 1(or L) and 2 are for forceing the lower gears, but you only use them for climing very step hills or for a faster take off at lighs (not recommended) Some have an "over drive" (mitshbishi) button pressing it will select one gear down. The "E" and "S" (as well as the normal "Drive" )settings describe different operating envelopes that you can switch between, depending on your driving style and/or driving situation. The "S" or sport position gives the driver access to the full performance ability of the vehicle as-is. The "D" or drive position restricts the performance (notably acceleration) of the vehicle a bit, which tames the beast significantly and improves fuel economy because lower RPMs are commanded by the ECU for any particular throttle opening. The "E" or economy position reduces the beast to a pussy-cat, with corresponding improvement to the fuel economy for the same reasons given above. Note though, the pussy-cat is still capable respectable performance. I normally use the "E" position almost exclusivly and switch to "S" in situations where i anticipate a need for a "turbo-boost".

What position should overdrive button be in on a Nissan sunny automatic car wheh driving it?

In Nissan Sunny (and some other cars too), overdrive is ON when the button is DEPRESSED and there's NO LIGHT in the dashboard. The automatic transmission will utilise all the 4 forward gears (the 4th gear being the overdrive that helps in fuel economy -- similar to 5th gear in a manual gearbox). This is the recommended setting for normal driving. When the button is NOT DEPRESSED, you turn OFF overdrive, and the indicator LIGHTS UP in the dashboard. In this mode, the automatic transmission will NOT shift into 4th gear.

What is POWER E-AT button for on 1993 Mercury Villager Van dash?

E-AT. Electronic Automatic Transmission. Usually turned off for normal driving. However, you may want to turn it on when driving in steeper hilly areas (Pittsburgh comes to mind). Engaging this system tells the computer to allow the transmission to shift at a lower engine speed thereby helping to maintain better power for climbing hills.
