It effectively prevented the establishment of an Arab Palestinian State. Israel controlled 78% of former Mandatory Palestine and Egypt and Jordan occupied the remainder. Another result of the war was that Palestinian refugees had been scattered from their former home to numerous countries in the Arab World, each treating them more barbarically than the next.

The Israeli people gained back land they had had since the early Bible days. The Palestinians had a mass exodus of 700,000 people. This resulted in 50 year conflict between the Palestinians/Arabs.

The results for the Suez War were as follows:

  • Egypt managed to keep control of the Suez Canal as Britain and France were forced to withdraw by the UN.
  • Israel managed to gain control of the Gulf of Aqaba, giving them access to the Red Sea for trading. They were also able to gain access to the Straits of Tiran; Israel's outlet to trade with Asia and Africa.
  • When the Israelis withdrew from Sinai, UN troops (UNEF) moved in to guard the border between Israel and Egypt. In particular, UN forces were sent to Gaza to prevent more raids on Israel and to Sharm el-Sheikh to guard the passage of Israeli shipping through the Straits of Tiran.
  • Britain and France didn't manage to gain control of the Suez Canal as they were forced to withdraw because the USA threatened them.
  • Nasser (Egypt's President) emerged as a hero among the Arabs because he stood up against the Western powers (USA, Britain and France) and managed to gain control of the Suez Canal. Also, he was able to claim that the Egyptian army had only been defeated by the Israelis because they had support from Britain and France.
  • Israel gained respect from Nasser for their military force because they managed to gain control of Sinai. However, they were persuaded by the Americans to withdraw in 1957.

Israel won but no treaties were made, only truces. This meant that war could break out again at any time. The Arab countries began the tactic of Economic Strangulation on Israel. This meant they refused to trade with Israel, blocked the Gulf of Aqaba at Sharm-Al-Sheikh in the Sinai Desert; this was to prevent Israel from trading with the Southern Hemisphere. The Arabs also banned Israel from entering Arab air-space and Israel wasn't allowed to use the Suez Canal in Egypt. In addition, some Palestinians who were angered at Israel began to perform small attacks on it. Arab countries such as Egypt support these refugees who became known as Fedayeen by supplying them with small arms and equipment. These attacks were very low key and unorganised.
