A wave cut platform is formed when the destructive waves hit the face of the cliff and cause undercutting between the high and low tide marks. This is a result of corrosion and hydraulic action it is called a wave-cut notch and the part of cliff above is called the overhang . This notch gets bigger over time and creates a small cave under the cliff. The overhang will eventually become unsupported and then it will collapses and the cliff begins to retreat. The boulders from the cliff will be carried away by the sea and will uncover a gently slopping wave-cut platform. As this process repeats itself the wave-cut platform will increase in size as the cliff retreats further. At high tide the wave-cut notch will slowly become smoother from erosion such as solution, attrition and corrosion although it will still have rock pools.

A wave-cut platform is the narrow flat area often seen at the base of a sea cliff caused by the action of the waves. It forms after destructive waves hit against the cliff face, causing undercutting between the high and low water marks, mainly as a result of corrosion and hydraulic power, creating a wave-cut notch. This notch then enlarges into a cave. The waves undermine this portion until the roof of the cave cannot hold due to the pressure and freeze-thaw weathering acting on it, and collapse, resulting in the cliff retreating landward.

A wave cut platform is made due to erosion of the head land or cliff.

The constant and repetitive crashing of the waves on the rock which have sand grains in them wear away at the rock and eventually wear out a cave that collapses on itself forming a platform below the headland or cliff and that ids then called the platform.

type wave cut notches in wiki and you will find the answer

ps:wiki is not working right now

wave cut notches are formed when the sea erodes the bottom of a cliff. Every time the sea is hitting against the cliff face, it makes a groove/cut into the rock. eventually the cut gets so far/deep into the rock that the top part of the cliff falls off as there is nothing for it to sit on!
