There were two important groups: Die Brücke and Der blaue Reiter. The first group in Dresden and Berlin included Schmidt-Rottluff, Kirchner, Mueller, Pechstein and Heckel. The other (in Munich) included Kandinsky, Marc, Macke, Münter, Jawlensky, Werefkin and Klee. Not in a group was Emil Nolde.

It was started by a couple of German artists in the early 1900s - Bruke and Reiter. ( I have never heard of them either!)

But the most famous one was van Gogh.

Answer 2:

Van Gogh was not part of a movement. But he is usually mentioned as an inspiration for the artists in the expressionist movements:

Les fauves (Matisse ...)

Die Brücke (Kirchner...)

Blauer Reiter (Kandinsky...)
