Before they were the Beatles; John, Paul and George were in a band usually called the Quarrymen. It was renamed the Beatles in 1960. They performed in Tony Sheridan's band The Beat Brothers for a few recordings. Ringo Starr was the drummer for Rory Storm and the Hurricanes before he joined the Beatles.
John Lennon formed the Plastic Ono Band with Yoko as the Beatles came towards its end. Paul McCartney formed Wings shortly after the split. Much later, George Harrison formed The Traveling Wilbury's with highly influential musicians Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. Ringo Starr formed Ringo Starr's All Starr Band at around the same time.
Former Beatle drummer Pete Best formed The Pete Best Band in 1988.

YES! They still ARE important! The Beatles are one of the most famous bands EVER! AND they influence a lot of bands today. With out the Beatles, music wouldn't be what it is.
Paul McCartney is best known for his work with two bands: The Beatles and later Wings. However, earlier in his life he was in bands that preceded The Beatles. These bands were The Quarrymen, Johnny and the Moondogs, The Rainbows and the Silver Beatles.
