Back in the old country, we used stinging nettle. Put the nettle in a wooden barrel, and let it stay in the sun for about a week. Spray your plants with that water.
Use a cheap dish washing liquid, about 1 teaspoon to a gallon of lukewarm water. You can add a dash of hot pepper juice or cayenne pepper. Also add about 2 tablespoons of Listerine.
Jerry Baker's book on gardening pests also has a lot of information on friendly pest control.
You can also plant abundant, tiny flowers that provide nectar sources for gnat-sized parasitic wasps that lay their eggs in the eggs or bodies of insect pests. Thyme, alyssum, achillea (yarrow), and cilantro or dill that have been allowed to flower are good plants for attracting both parasitic wasps and bees to pollinate your vegetables. These insects help keep pest numbers from getting out of control.
Plant bunch grasses near your garden to provide habitat for ground beetles, which are voracious predators of snails, slugs, and crawling insects. Lacy foliage (dill, carrots, yarrow, etc.) provides habitat for predatory insects like lady bugs and Spiders.
keep the vegetables inside, hehe. OR you can spray WD 40 around the base of the plant that keeps most bugs away its got something to do with the oily residue or they dont like the smell,if youre growing seedlings in pots spray WD40 around the lip of the pot this keeps slugs away.If you are planting out on an alllotment when the shoots are about 4inches in height sprinkle some sharp gravel around the base of each plant and spray with WD40 taking care not to get any on the plant. This works on my garden in england.
There are several ways to control bugs and pests while not resorting to chemicals in an organic garden. Planting specific plants, especially from the mint family will keep some bugs away. Adding natural elements such as limes or cayenne pepper can also help. Although it may seem counterproductive, introducing some bugs, such as ladybugs, can actually help keep the bad bugs away.
Beneficial wildlife, carnivorous plants, companion planting, horticultural oils and insecticidal soaps, row netting and sanitation are ways to control garden insect pests without spraying pesticides. Damselflies, dragonflies, insect-eating birds, lacewings, ladybugs and praying mantises and insect-eating plants such as pitchers and Venus flytraps feed upon garden pests such as aphids, flies, gnats and mosquitoes whereas horticultural oils kill insect pest eggs, insecticidal soaps suffocate non-egg insect pest stages, marigolds and mints shew them away and row netting sabotages their access.
Diatamacheous earth, since it's safe and works on almost all crawling bugs, i also recommend at least (1) motion activated sprinkler to deter wildlife away pointing towards property boundary.
