A contraction-like pain on the left side back of the head may be symptomatic of many different diseases or disorders which may range from non-consequential to serious and requiring immediate medical attention. In addition to those already listed I would add:
Tension Type Headache
Occipital Neuralgia
Cervical Dystonia
For appropriate diagnosis, treatment and prevention of headache disorders, seek the help of a board certified headache specialist.
--------------------try doing a search for neuralgia.
if there are other sympoms, such as blurriness of vision, or sensitivity to light, sounds, or smells, you may be experiencing a migraine... also, try using ice on the back of you skull to reduce swelling of the blood vessels, make sure you drink pletny of water, sometimes dehydration causes odd headaches...
A headache on one side of the head is usally a migrane. Talk to your doctor. This could be a muscle spasm due to misaligned cervical vertebrae (neck bones). Note WHEN this occurs -- Are you tired, tense, nervous, under stress? Have you been under a car or in some other unusual position where you had to use your neck muscles differently? Have you been lifting heavy things (unaccustomed exertion)? When I get tense neck muscles, I perform self-massage, try to breathe more deeply (to get more oxygen into the bloodstream), take hot showers to loosen tense muscles in the neck and upper back. I found out in early adulthood that I had misaligned cervical vertebrae due to some childhood injury. The bones had been misaligned for so long that the chiropractor said they were almost impossible to correct without years of adjustments. I had migraine-like headaches for years before this. I have learned how to keep my neck and back from "locking up" and causing pinched nerves and associated pain and muscle tension: Regular stretching and limbering exercises. Proper amount of sleep. A "no stress allowed" attitude. Self-massage and proper breathing.
You should go and see a qualified medical practitioner (a doctor) about this.
