Why not resolve to plant some trees every year? If each of us plants one little tree, it can amount to a great amount of afforestation making the environment healthier. Increasing the use of bicycles or making a habit to walk down short distances can contribute to reduction in air pollution. Try to minimize the use of vehicles. Use CFC-free products. For some destinations, the use of vehicles has no better options. But at least maintain your vehicles; clean their exhaust pipes, keep the pollution they cause under strict control.

Trees are cute and fun, but have nothing to do with energy conservation. CFC's have been banned for a decade and also have nothing to do with our resources.

The wasteful use of energy is still increasing dramatically and foolishly. In the mid 1970's almost no home had central air conditioning. Today, only a handful of homes are without this luxury. The concept of being frugal with energy is quickly dying. In place of actual conservation, we are now pushing ideals for others to do.

It is no longer MY job to not use air conditioning and be slightly less comfortable. It is the job of the power company to supply my wants with "greener" power and allow me to feel good at helping mandate the green.

As a result, we are seeing large increases in power demand and no real conservation. we see wind systems popping up everywhere to make us feel good about out increased demand, but we ignore the fact that wind systems are horrible for the environment and produce almost no power. (Possibly much worse then a coal plant).

Recycling is fine. What would be FAR better is to not make the waste that gets recycled. Use water from a tap (which is far cleaner then bottled water) rather then polluting by buying bottled water. Stop drinking soda from cans. Use larger 2 liter bottles, or none at all.

Your home should not be air conditioned, if you are truly interested in conservation. Your home should not be heated past 65 degrees or so, if your interest is really one of conservation. Take a shower that is short.

Help ban wasteful processes, like mass transit in most cities. Empty buses do not conserve. They are awesome political tools for regulating the movement of humans, but rarely provide green transport. The Chicago to Milwaukee AMTRAK transit, as an example, averages 9 miles per gallon per passenger. Hardly a green process. This is the fourth busiest Amtrak route. Others would get even worse mileage per passenger.

We need to start taking honest hard looks at what does save power and energy if we want a planet for our children. Feel good politics ignores the needed changes and allows us to merrily go down a very bad path.

Starting to create nuclear plants, like Europe, would be a great first step. Transforming the grid into small non transferring areas would also help. The United States electrical grid is the number one single consumer of power on the planet. Homes and cities coming off this national grid would seriously reduce energy consumption. Self generating power makes people more aware of what they are using too. Shutting down your home system at night would be a great energy savings that a power company could never do. They must have power there in case you might need it.

Bottom line is to stop thinking it is a companies job, or your Governments job. It is your job to use less. If you do not need it, don't buy it. Rechargeable batteries would do so much to help reduce the billions of batteries that are discarded annually. Making your own coffee rather then buying that Starbucks in a disposable cup is another savings. We need to think about what we (you and I and not a collective we) can and are doing!
