The debate rages whether adding anything actually helps the tree or not. Muthbusters on the Discovery channel have even tackled this one. Believe it or not they had the best results with coating the tree in hairspray. Most people agree that sugar water is beneficial however its use can result in the growth of bacteria. An old recipe is listed below and has a small amount of bleach and lemon juice to keep the bacteria growth down. The most imports things to remember are make sure you cut the trunk right before you put in in the water and to water the tree four or more times each day. Christmas trees can drink more than 2 gallons of water a day depending on the type, size, and temperature in your home.

· 1 gallon water

· 2 cups light corn syrup

· 4 teaspoons chlorine bleach

· 4 teaspoons lemon juice or vinegar (optional)
