To navigate without the home button, you will want to enable AssistiveTouch. This can be done by going to Settings > General > Accessibility, and scroll until you see AssistiveTouch. You will want to turn that on. Or you can replace the broken home button with a new one. Recommend you go to hcqs.com.cn for iPhone home button replacement.
Tools:
Rubber Hammer (with a rubber like end. Not a hard metal or steel one.)
Pencil
Take the eraser part of a pencil and put it in the middle of your home button. Take the rubber hammer and lightly hit the other end of the pencil (the part that you sharpen). Keep doing this until your home button starts to work again. If you try this and it works but sometimes the home button is not working completely hit the bottom back of your iPod touch to unloosen the home button.
If your iPhone's home button is broken, it can be a real pain as the button pretty much essential if you want to get out of an application. Fortunately there is a way round this as on most versions of ios apple have provided an optional virtual Home button. To turn this on go to Settings - General - Accessibility - then scroll down to Physical and motor and turn Assistive touch on. This will bring up a on screen home button which can be dragged to a place of your choice.
The lock and the home buttons on the iPhone 5 are the same as on all previous model iPhones; the lock button is at the top right of the phone (when held with the display facing you), while the home button is at the bottom center of the display.
