Well im not sure if it will help your sore throat, but milkshakes and ice cream fell good in you throat unlike other food you may eat.

Hot is actually better than cold, it is less severe on the tissue in your throat, but if the cold makes you feel better go for it. Soup is good and so is tea with honey, ginger and lemon. Sucking on candy or cough drops is also good, because it bathes your throat and relieves the soreness.

Try something nice and warm, but not hot, like tea with squirts of lemon, or chicken broth. Don't eat ice-cream because it coats your throat, and milk products can increase mucus production. An occasional Popsicle would be better than ice cream if something cold feels good, but warm liquids will help your sore throat heal faster. Drink plenty of liquids to help keep your body able to fight the infection, and to be sure you do not get dehydrated if you have a fever with the sore throat.

There are cough drops and throat sprays available to temporarily numb your throat when it is so sore you aren't able to drink enough water or swallow foods. Ask your Pharmacist for help finding the best product for your symptoms.

You can also help by gargling warm salted water. Salt is soothing and helps your throat heal faster when mixed in water (it should taste only a little salty, don't mix it too strong or it can actually make things worse). The warmth of the water helps bring the circulation with healing blood cells to the area to speed things up as well. Doing this several times a day will help. Do not drink the salty water, gargle and then spit it out. A little swallowed will not hurt you, if you accidentally do swallow it, unless you are on a very restricted salt free diet. (see below for gargle recipe)

If you have a fever with the sore throat, if it lasts more than a few days, if it is more painful than your usual sore throat with a cold, or if you look in your throat and see red or white spots, you should have it checked by your health care professional. You might need to have antibiotics prescribed if it is a bacterial infection and not a viral infection like a cold or flu.

Recipe for salt solution for gargle:

2 teaspoons of salt

1 pint of water

Stir until the salt is dissolved, it will dissolve faster if the water is warm. It should be only warm and not hot, the same temperature as your body or slightly warmer. Be sure your child is old enough to know how to gargle before trying this, they should not drink the salt solution and you don't want them to aspirated any of it.

Optional: Some people add a teaspoon of baking soda to the solution (not baking powder). This can help to clear the mucus if your throat is coated. It would not be harmful if you swallow the solution by accident with or without the baking soda.

Other people recommend eating pickles or drinking pickle juice. This can be okay in limitation unless you are on a salt-restricted diet since pickle juice and pickles have a high sodium content. Sipping on lemon juice or lemons can provide the acidity to perhaps change the pH and make the throat a less hospitable place for pathogens, as might the pickles, but without the salt. The salt in the brine of the pickles can be part of what helps sooth, too, so, this in combination with a salt water gargle (no swallowing) can perhaps do the same trick.

It is said that eating crisps can help to heal a sore throat as the roughness of the crisps scratch the throat helping it to heal quicker as it's removing the inflamed areas.

Although if this is too painful I would recommend soft foods until you feel up to eating more solid foods so for example, soups, jacket potatoes and buttery toast.

If your in any doubt please contact your doctor or visit a walk-in-centre as they'll know the best advice for you.

Good Luck & Hope your feeling better soon.

A sore throat can be eased by eating cool, soothing foods such as ice-cream or ice-lollies. The cause of the sore throat needs to be investigated. Is it caused by a viral or bacterial infection....or over-use such as frequently shouting at a footy match etc. An infection requires treatment via your doctor. If the throat's sore because of inflamation due to shouting etc, then only resting by talking only when necessary is the answer. Treat the symptoms with an analgesic such as Paracetamol or ibuprofen & increase your fluid intake...preferably cool drinks. A spoonful of honey in a cup of boiling water which has then been left to cool is cheap & soothing.

Food is an important factor when it comes to managing sore throat. If you see what causes sore throat, you would know that it can be avoided by eating less oily and spicy foods. In order to make things simple, have bland foods as far as possible. Try and avoid any chilled and iced drinks and if you are in a cold country keep your neck part covered.
