Krakatoa formed near a subduction zone. Here seafloor that is part of the Indian Plate slides under a section of the Eurasian Plate and into the mantle. As this happens the plate pulls water and other volatiles with it. This leeches into the mantle, altering the chemistry of the hot rock and casuing some of it to melt into magma. This rises toward the surface through cracks in the crust, forming volcanoes such as Karaktoa.
