There are a multiple reasons for low oxygen saturation, including cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, cardiomyopathy, and even dehydration. The main problem is that the body is starved for oxygen. When the bloodstream does not receive enough oxygen from either the lungs or heart or a disease or illness is depleting the oxygen from the bloodstream, the organs and the brain suffer. Injury and blood loss will also cause low oxygen saturation.

Either you aren't taking in enough oxygen (Asthma, smothering, constriction of the chest or throat), you aren't moving your blood through your lungs effectively (poor cardiac function), you don't have enough hemoglobin (the red stuff) in your blood (anemia caused by sickness or blood loss), or the hemoglobin is unable to take up oxygen (carbon monoxide poisoning). Oh, or you're suddenly using a lot more oxygen than you're used to (sprinting up stairs - you pant because you have temporary hypoxemia = lack of oxygen in the blood).
