Laertes Dies & it is clear that Hamlet, too, is dieng.Horatio wants to drink the poisoned wine in order to die with Hamlet, but Hamlet insists that he remain alive to tell Hamlet's story & clear his name. Before he dies, Hamlet appoints the young Norwegian prince, Fortinbras, as his successor to thr throne. As Hamlet dies in Horatio's arms, Horatio bids him a last farewell.
Hamlet's death was a result of many occurrences. For instance, Old King Hamlet's murder promoted Hamlet to take action in order to avenge his father's death. Unfortunately for Hamlet, he was not a murderer at heart and could not take Claudius' life without ensuring that he was guilty. His hesitation and inaction eventually led Claudius to plot Hamlet's death as a means of attempting to spare his own life.
Also, Hamlet's obsession with death and revenge eventually caused him to act on impulse, which caused him to kill Polonius. When Laertes came home and learned that his father was dead and that his sister, Ophelia, had lost her mind, he swore that he would kill the person responsible. This left the young scholar open to manipulation by Claudius, who used him to indirectly kill Hamlet.
Furthermore, his mother's betrayal caused Hamlet to sink into a deep state of depression and rage. He has just lost his father, whom he loved dearly, and now his mother was sleeping with his uncle. He felt that she had tarnished her sacred bond with Old Hamlet and wanted nothing more than for her to feel ashamed of her actions. However, he could not act out against the King and Queen, and had no choice but to remain silent. In time, his unspoken emotions built up and prompted him to act in an impulsive manner that ultimately caused his demise.
As a result, both Hamlet and others are responsible for his tragic demise. Hamlet's hesitation and inaction caused his death, while the actions of others resulted in his depression and feelings of betrayal. The combination of these forces pushed him towards his downfall as emotional turmoil overtook his being and sent his mind into chaos.
Hamlet does not have a downfall. This word means what happens when someone who used to be powerful, respected, and on top of the world loses that power and respect and whatever else he had. Macbeth has a downfall, from respected king to hated tyrant. Richard III does the same. Othello falls from being a happily married man with a successful military career to a murderer who only loses from his murder and gains nothing. But Hamlet? He starts out as the well-loved prince of Denmark and finishes up the same way. He does not lose the love and respect of others even after he starts acting crazy.
