Henry VIII wanted to divorce his wife Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Boleyn. The Catholic church did not permit divorce, and threatened to excommunicate Henry. Excommunication of the monarch would release the peasants from their religious obligation to obey him, and Henry wasn't prepared to deal with Church-sponsored organized rebellion.

For clarification, this is about Henry II, not Henry VIII

At the time, the Church had its own laws and its own courts. Bishops, priests, monks and nuns could not face prosecution in the courts controlled by the King, only in the ecclesiastical courts. Since these were staffed by priests, they tended to be lenient with their own.

The Church was also extremely rich. Because people had given land and money to the Church over the centuries, it was the country's biggest landowner and was richer than the king. As with many rich institutions, there was widespread corruption within the Church - and corrupt clerics could not be brought to justice.
