According to the weather channel guy it was a combination of things starting with the Pacific ocean cooling causing colder than normal weather in the northern states. Added to that is an unusually fast and arced jet stream forcing the cold air south where it met with the normal flow of warm air out of the gulf of Mexico. When the cold air met the warmer air inside the storm it set up rotations that resulted in tornadoes.
