This is still under debate in the medical community, but fibromyalgia may be related to a lack of sleep resulting in a cumulative failure of the body's normal self-repair mechanisms which operate most efficiently during sleep.

There is no known cause of fibromyalgia, but there are several theories.

It is believed to involve psychological, genetic, neurobiological and environmental factors. Being a sufferer, myself, I can attest to the fact that my pains are caused by rapid changes in barometric pressure. I am so sensitive that I can detect a storm moving in roughly four days before the event. I am also affected by the storm moving out, as well. I have even coined a term for this which I like to call Baromyalgia!

There are several theories as to what causes Fibromyalgia, from viruses, to trauma (physical or psychological), or an inherited disorder etc, but there is no definitive answer yet.

Recently the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno reported in the Science Journel that a retrovirus (XMRV) has been discovered to be present in 95% of people they tested who had Fibro, compared to only 3 or 4% of healthy test subjects.

The virus (xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus) is from the same group of viruses that cause AIDS and a type of leukemia in people and was first identified in men suffering from prostrate cancer. XMRV affects the immune system and may cause a range of illnesses. Although, just being present in people with Fibro is not to say that the virus is the cause of the illness.

Also, this is not the first time that a virus has been linked to Fibro and unless further trials replicate the Institutes' findings, it is unlikely the true cause of this debilitating illness will be found any time soon.

There is no known cause of fibromyalgia yet. I have fibromyalgia and I have heard so many different things as to what some doctors thinks causes it. Some doctors think it is overactive nerves in your body making your pain intensify. I believe this one myself because I have overactive nerves in my back. Some doctors think its something in your brain telling you your pain is worse than it is.

Are fibromyalgia vitamins good for you?

Fibromyalgia is not a vitamin, it is a disease. It is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the joints. There is no cure and doctors do not know what causes a person to develop it. It causes chronic pain, so no, it's not good for you.

Is fibromyalgia worse than arthriits?

Fibromyalgia can cause pain and tire someone out mentally. Arthritis only causes pain due to inflammation. The problem is physicians don't really know what causes fibromyalgia, unlike arthiritis which is famously known. Fibromyalagia is harder to bear, so I think fibromyalgia is worse than arthiritis.

Can Celiac Disease cause Fibromyalgia?

I'm not a doctor, and not an expert on either. However, eight months ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. I found that by avoiding gluten, my fibromyalgia conditions were eased. Three days ago I was diagnosed with Ceoliac Disease. My doctor explained that while it is unclear whether or not one causes the other, the two are highly correlated. The underlying causes of Fibromyalgia are unknown--it should be viewed more as a syndrome, that is, a collection of symptoms.

Can Fibromyalgia cause inflammation of joints?

Fibromyalgia does not cause inflammation in the joints, but that does not mean that those suffering from Fibromyalgia may not also have inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by any number of things from food sensitivities to arthritis and autoimmune disorders. Many of those suffering from Fibromyalgia also suffer from a co-existing condition that causes inflammation. The most common causes of joint inflammation with symptoms that often overlap Fibromyalgia are Rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus. Other types of arthritis including gouty arthritis and psoriatic arthritis also have symptoms that overlap Fibromyalgia. Because something as simple as a food sensitivity can cause inflammation in the body, it can be very difficult to pinpoint the cause of inflammation when a specific diagnosis is not available.
