The Tsunami of December 26, 2004 was triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra. In this area the India plate is sliding under the Burma plate. Over the course of many years stress built up at the site until the Burma plate slipped eastward. When this happen some of the ocean floor was thrust upward. This displaced a massive column of water and triggered the tsunami.
