The Tsunami of December 26, 2004 was triggered by a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra. In this area the India plate is sliding under the Burma plate. Over the course of many years stress built up at the site until the Burma plate slipped eastward. When this happen some of the ocean floor was thrust upward. This displaced a massive column of water and triggered the tsunami.

Japanese Islands is on four tectonic plates, and are apart of the "The Ring Of Fire" that is along the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. When a tectonic plate moves on top of another tectonic plate because of built up pressure, it caused an earthquake to raise underwater seabeds, which caused that tsunami.
