Great Britain needed money to pay its debts from waging the Seven Years War with France. Since on offshoot of this war was the French and Indian War in North America and since Britain felt it had protected the colonies from being taken over by France, that the colonise should share in paying for that protection. Many oppressive taxes were imposed in England as well in order to pay for the cost of the war, so Britain had no qualms about imposing taxes on the colonies too.
