this is down to an incorrect driver or windows driver installed for the printer or a conflict within the software. try uninstaling ALL software to do with the printer and the printer itself and reinstalling it. if this doesnt solve the problem there could be a problem with the port it is connected to (ie parallel).

you can also change the pdl in the driver properties... some pdl's deliberately enlarge data files; if that doesn't work try decreasing your dpi and open up your task manager to monitor your available memory when sending a print job... you can never have enough memory! printers by default come with enough onboard memory to process simple jobs. if you are in an environment where several job are sent similtanioulsy you might want to get the memory of that device upgraded.
