The earthquake risk is high in Alaska because there's a fracture in the earth's crust along the state's southern coast. The crust sometimes slips along this fracture. That's what creates earthquakes.

Actually, there are may reasons for earthquakes so there is no definite causes, but there are reasons.

1 Plates siding against each other

2 Plated moving under another plate (subducton, not suduction, kiddies!)

3 It is a man made earthquake that is a result of things penatraiting the earth.

Alaska has such a high risk associated with earthquakes because the tectonic plates maybe present in a large number underneath Alaska's crust. These plates move because of the circular movement of magma in the core inside the earth.

Why does the risk of earthquakes vary across the US?

Earthquakes tend to occur most often at or near the boundaries between tectonic plates. One such boundary runs along the coast of the Western United States all the way from the bottom of California to Alaska. So places near this boundary are at the highest risk of earthquakes. As you move further east, you move further away from this tectonic plate boundary so the risk of earthquakes goes down (although they can still happen).

Did California just have an earthquake?

We don't know how to predict earthquakes. Given California's history and that it is on a fairly active fault line we can say that it will certainly continue to have earthquakes and at some point there will be a big one. But as to when, no one knows.

What are several high risk zones for earthquakes?

High risk earthquake zones are located where tectonic plates shift against each other. Two examples are along the coast of North and South America (California, Chile, Mexico, to name a few), along the Himalayas and the middle east ( Bangladesh, India, etc.).

What would NOT be a good idea in an area that has a high risk for earthquakes?

While there are many things that are not a good idea to do in an area that has a high risk of earthquakes, probably the single most dangerous thing to put in such a location would be a nuclear power plant.
