Migraines can occurs on one side of the head. It is usually a throbbing pain. Migraines have many different triggers which are individual to each person. They usually last 4-24 hours, and people exhibit other signs, such as nausea and sensitivity to light.
Trigeminal neuralgia, however, is a type of nerve disorder which can also occur on one side of the head. Neuralgia generally has more of a burning sensation. Entrapment and inflammation of the other nerves near the ear can also cause this pain (posterior auricular nerve, occipital nerve).
Rarely people can have issues with thrombosis (clots) in veins or arteries of the brain which can cause issues. This needs an MRA to confirm.
If you are having consistent headaches, especially if you are having two or more a month that significantly impact your ability to function - you need to see your doctor.

∙ 12y agoSharp pains above the ear can be caused by a long list of problems including Migraine, occipital neuralgia or even temporal arteritis. For a diagnosis, a doctor needs to be consulted. Preferably a headache specialist who is best able to diagnose, treat and manage headache disorders.
