Hydrocephalus, also known as water on the brain, is a condition where an abnormal amount of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) builds up in the ventricles of the brain. This is a common secondary condition to the neural tube defect Spina Bifida, but it can occur on it's own, most likely from a head injury.

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is excessive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. There are two types obstructive and communicating. Any tumor can cause this problem. Inflammatory narrowing and vascular malformations are other causes.

In communicating variety there is no block to the flow of CSF. The condition is due to impaired absorption of the CSF or rarely due to excessive production of CSF.

Hydrocephalus is when the cavities in the brain, the ventricles, are enlarged and there is an excess of the fluid in the brain known as CSF or cerebral spinal fluid. The head can be enlarged and the brain may shrink. Hydrocephalus is the most common cause of abnormally large heads in newborn babies.

Hydrocephalus can result from obstruction of CSF flow (obstructive hydrocephalus) or impaired resorption of CSF (communicating hydrocephalus).
