When babies are born, their circulatory system (the heart and blood system) is going through a lot of changes. It's kind of scary sometimes if you see a baby's hand all blue, especially if you can't get a good look at its face, but blueness of the hands and feet is normal, and may come and go, depending on whether they're crying and moving, or sleeping. This results in the hands and feet being a little cooler than you might expect, but their bodies are designed to tolerate this for a time. This blueness, called acrocyanosis, is a normal finding in a newborn. The blueness that you should be concerned about starts around the face, especially around the eyes, nose, and mouth. It is a sign of central cyanosis and means that there is not enough oxygen in the blood.
