Refraction is the bending of a wave when it enters a medium where it's speed is different. The refraction of light when it passes from a fast medium to a slow medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media. The amount of bending depends on the indices of refraction of the two media and is described quantitatively by Snell's Law.

Light waves travel and different speeds depending on the medium they are traveling through. When light goes from one medium (air) to another, 'thicker' medium (i.e glass it will slow down causing it to bend away from its original direction. This will only happen if the light hits at an angle.

When the light leaves the glass it will speed up and the opposite will happen, it will bend towards the original path.

It is mainly because of light having different velocity in different media
