First check to see if you have the symptoms of heartburn. If it's heartburn, it will likely occur after you eat or drink something that commonly causes heartburn. Something that is bad for some is wine, coffee and breads. If it's heartburn it will also go away after a while and may include some mild chest pain. Try avoiding the food and drinks that cause heartburn for a period of time and see if you notice a difference. Do not take antacids unless you are certain it's an excess of acid. For many it's a lack of stomach acid. This may be noticable if you feel bloated (the food stays in longer than usual because you don't have enough stomach acid to break it down). This can lead to food being passed into your colon that isn't full digested that causes gas. You may also consider monitoring your fiber intake to help push things along properly.

It may vary person to person but always monitor what you are eating to see if anything is triggering it.

From someone elses experience, they noted the following:

Since I have been to the doctor for this, I can maybe answer this for you the most common answer to this is gas, constipation, but most gas that is trapped in the left loop of your intestine it is quite painful and you can feel like you are just going to die. But this may not always be the answer, be sure to check with you dr if it worsens because it may be something else.

Also, you might want to see if you have any low thyroid symptoms. See the link below for more information. If you do, thyroid medication will likely eliminate the pain. For a gnawing pain in my left side, I was told that I had IBS and I should take a pain medication. However, I had elevated cholesterol, exhaustion, constipation, difficulty losing weight and trouble with my memory. As a result, I went to an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid function and was prescribed levothyroxine. The pain in my side has disappeared. The pain under my ribs was almost a throbbing pain. It never seemed to move and did not get worse with deep breaths. Please see a doctor first to rule out any condition which might be more serious and then see an endocrinologist who specializes in thyroid function.

If the pain doesn't go away you must consult a physician.

This is caused by gas buildup. There are a couple of way to get rid of this. First way is to lay flat with no pillows and keep trying to burp. If this does not work then try pulling up on a bar (You can use anything as long as you are pulling away from yourself). Now well pulling up or away breath in really hard and try to burp. If this does not work called your doctor.

If you have already seen your doctor with no luck and the pain is fairly constant, the pain may be due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A low level of thyroid medication may eliminate the pain completely. It speeds up your metabolism and moves the waste through your system quicker.

There are many problems that could have caused pain under the left side of the rib cage from gas trapped inside the colon to a broken rib, kidney disorder or IBS(Irritable Bowel syndrome). Also pain under rib cage can be a symptom to any disorder of the organs inside the rib cage from spleen, kidney, stomach or intestine.

If you think if it is due to some kind or physical stress or gas, try to get some rest and try to expel the gas by leaning over the back of the chair.

If you think its something different then you should seek immediate medical attention as to diagnose what is the cause of the problem.
