Are they bald spots? If so, you may have what is called "Geographic tongue". No one knows for sure what causes it and it isn't harmful. You can learn more about it by going to this web site: http://www.geographictongue.org/

Although I have never heard of stress causing the tongue to swell, please be very very aware that a swollen tongue or lips can be a sign of a serious allergic reaction. Have you tried any new medications? Any new foods? Been in contact with Latex (i.e., blown up a balloon), etc.? Been stung by a bee or other insect? Think carefully about that. If you have any Benadryl or other allergy medication in your home, it would not hurt to take the recommended dose as listed on the bottle. Swelling is usually a localized reaction to something and is probably not caused by stress. If it continues, please call your physician and if they are closed for the evening, call the on-call service, just to check in with them. Watch it closely, because obviously too much swelling in your mouth/throat can cause difficulty breathing. Another consideration can be what is called "thrush" which is a yeast infection on your tongue -- sometimes it will appear to have a whitish film on it. This may cause your tongue to feel swollen, but the swelling would actually be minimal. If this is the case, your doctor will prescribe a topical medication for inside your mouth. Hope this helps.

It sure can. You can have red sores on your tongue, inside your cheeks or even on your lips. You can also have little white spots. The best thing to do is try to alleviate the stress as best you can, drink 8 - 10 glasses of water to dilute all that acididity, stay away from spicy or hot foods, eat yogurt to balance your PH level and rinse your mouth out with warm salted water AND THEN SPIT IT OUT! DO NOT RINSE YOUR MOUTH! If the above has not helped you it's best to make an appointment with your doctor. Good luck Marcy

Is it normal for a freshly pierced tongue ring to sink in the tongue a little bit?

No, the barbell is too short and your tongue is swelling. The barbell should always be longer for new piercings due to swelling, contact your piercer to see about getting a longer barbell. If left the tongue will swell to a point that will cause the barbell ball to be pulled into the tongue, get on some ice to control the swelling and contact your piercer.

How long after a tongue pierced can you have a beer?

I got my tongue pierced over a week ago and my friend got her's a year before me. She drank on the third night after her piercing, and the swelling on her tongue went down. I also did the same, and swelling also went down. Just be careful, cause when you drink beer that early after piercing it, the tongue will tingle from the carbonation. My tongue ring is almost completely healed now.
