I had a premmie baby and I asked the midwife whist I was in labour exactly the same thing. She told me it can be a variety of different things like poor eating habits,

high blood pressure, too much exercise, a condition with the baby or simply because the baby wants to come into the world as soon as possible.

My daughter had fluid in her lungs at that age because of three massive holes in her heart. She if okay now at the age of three, but only because of proper medical care from an extensive team of pediatric cardiologists. I wish your baby the best.

Why are some babies blue?

Babies turn blue when they have insufficient oxygen saturation in their bodies. When they are being delivered and they are blue it often means they have fluid in the lungs and the doctors or nurses have to clear the fluid. If they remain blue then it can mean there is a lung problem or heart problem. Sometimes in extremely rare instances the child could have a rare genetic problem or rare disease. Some are bluish when they are born premature and have underdeloped lungs, heart and cardiovascular systems.

What are some dangers of having premature babies?

There are many risks associated with having a premature baby (born before 37 weeks gestation). The risk of mortality for the baby is higher in it's first year after birth. Premature babies are also at higher risk of neurological and disability problems, due to the brain not having had the full gestation time to develop. This can also be true of the other vital organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs, and many premature babies can experience maladies of their vital organs.

Why do premature babies have respiratory distress?

Respiratory Distress Syndrom (RDS) is most common in babies born before 34 weeks of pregnancy. Babies with RDS don't have a protein called surfactant that keeps small air sacs in the lungs from collapsing.

Why does premature infants have difficulty breathing?

Premature babies are not ALWAYS sick. If they are born extremely premature then they have a higher risk for things like infection, respiratory distress, NEC, just to name a few. But older premature babies, for example a 33 week baby, may be perfectly healthy, just needs to learn how to nipple feed and gain weight before he/she goes home. A premature baby such as that would not be considered "sick".

Burst lungs in babies?

I am not really clear on the question, this can occur in premature babies for a variety of reasons. The Alveoli could not function properly and thus leak air into the the lung space. This rare condition is called Pneumothora. This happens because the underdeveloped lungs lack the slippery surface needed. Also due to the lungs not functioning correctly it is necessary that a breathing machine is used to force oxygen into the lungs and this can also cause the lungs to burst.

Does surfactant means to keep alveoli open and helps premature babies survive?

Quite often, surfactant is not fully present in premature babies which is why they tend to need extra breathing support when they are born.If doctors are able to hold off on the imminent birth of a premature baby, they will give the mother injections of steroids to try & speed up lung development.Surfactant reduces the surface tension of the lungs and allows them to expand, which is important for breathing.
