A variety of things can cause this problem... ranging from harmless to severe. If your arm is tingling but is not cold to the touch, the tingling comes from something putting pressure on a nerve. An arm which is cold to the touch or which does not pink up within 2 seconds after you press firmly on the skin with your fingers indicates a problem with blood circulation. Either problem should not be ignored. You should definitely seek treatment. Assuming a nerve issue (neurological issue) - on one end of the scale you could simply have a pulled, torn or stressed muscle causing swelling which is pressing on the nerve. Or you could have a misplaced bone in the shoulder or neck, which is by far the most common cause. This will be especially likely if you are over 30, have a desk/sedentary job, play contact sports, have been in a major accident, or have bad posture. You could also suffer from spinal spondylosis (doctor-speak for the cushioning between your vertabrae getting worn down, causing the bones to grind and seize against each other like a badly-oiled machine). Again this is fairly common and most people will suffer some form of this as they age. The first thing you should do is see a physician. An X-ray will probably be ordered. You might also like to consider the time when the pain started - did it follow any physical trauma or injury, episode of stress, illness, or did it just "appear"? Chiropracty/physiotherapy is often a followup if a skeletal problem is detected and can be highly effective. One thing you can also do to help the situation greatly is stretches - the "neural stretch" is a good one to do, as is anything involving the upper shoulders and neck. This may alleviate your symptoms. Correct posture and stretching will have to be continued long-term to have any chance of making it "go away", though. On the severe - but rare - side you could have a tumour, nerve disorder or even something as bizarre as what happened to a friend of mine. In his case he had spina bifida, and 30 years after the hole was "plugged" the spine grew a little piece of exra bone which slowly started severing his nerves. He took some time to get it treated, by which time he had lost the feeling in his hands permanently (he still has full movement, but can't feel if he's burning his hand on the stove or cut it with a knife). This is why any neurological problems involving tingling, persistent pain or numbness should ALWAYS be checked out as soon as possible. Do so.

It means that the shoulder of the road is soft and non-compacted, probably not hard-surfaced, and you could easily get stuck on the shoulder. In a situation like this, if you need to stop at the side of the road, make sure that your left wheels are still on the pavement.
