Have you researched Occipital Neuralgia. I have it and know other who do and we have those symptoms. I suggest you "image" Google Occipital neuralgia and I think it may help you with your question. I found a support board through mdjunction for C2/Occipital neuralgia with fellow sufferers.

That could be a migraine headache or a muscle tension headache. If it happens often you should discuss it with your doctor. You could try an over the counter migraine remedy to see if it provides relief. They contain a combination of aspirin, acetaminophen and caffeine. Resting your head on a cold pack might help and on the other hand a warm shower can help. Sometimes a strong cup of coffee can help.

Shooting pain on one side of the head can be a symptom of any of a number of different disorders or diseases including occipital neuralgia or ice pick headaches. For a diagnosis, a doctor needs to be consulted. Preferably a headache specialist who is best able to diagnose, treat and manage headache disorders.
