It depends on what type of washer it is.

If it's a GE model, and the motor / transmission is good most likely your problem is the Agitator Coupler which is located beneath the agitator

If the washer is made by Whirlpool / Kenmore and the motor / transmission is good most likely your problem is the Agitator Dogs which are located inside the agitator

Both are easy and inexpensive fixes

What causes the washing machine to shake during the spin cycle?

A washing machine that shakes during the spin cycle is off-balance. This is caused by (1) the machine is not level, or (2) the load has shifted OR is too heavy for one load. To correct this:Make sure NOT to overload the machine. If you are washing something heavy, make sure you evenly distribute the item around the agitator. Wash light weight items with a couple heavier towels. When the shaking starts, open the lid (top-loader only) and see if the load shifted to one side... re-balance, re-distribute the load.Balance the machine. All you need to buy is a Level (tool) and a package of shims (or use thick folded cardboard). A hardware store can instruct you about how to use a level. To bring the bead inside the tool to midline, place shims or folded cardboard under the feet on whichever side(s) is / are lowest. Continue until the level shows the bead at midline. ** This is the most common cause of shaking. It can become so badly off balance that the machine "walks" (moves from its position). If you do not make sure the machine is level, the constant shaking can damage the motor and agitator.

Why does dark laundry come out with white dust or lint on it?

Are you using washing powders or liquid? If you are using powder, then this is soap residue from incompletely dissolved powder. Put the washing powder in FIRST because it will have more time to dissolve before being spread throughout the wash. Also use less powder. Most manufacturers provide a graduated measuring scoop to gauge the size of the load. Most likely you are using too much powder for the size of your load. A rule of thumb when you are washing darks is to use about 1/4 less soap than you think you need. A little practice will ensure that the clothes will be clean but spot free using less washing powders. Other causes might be that you are crowding your machine. Put your wash in dry before you turn on the machine. The clothes should fit in the machine without pushing them down or packing. After all, the water must circulate throughout the clothes freely much like washing yourself. When there is too much in the machine, the clothes don't turn with the agitator and the washing materials don't dissolve correctly because the clothes are pressing on the soap, sticking to the clothes. When was the last time you wiped out your machine? Like all surfaces anywhere, the drum of your machine needs to be cleaned periodically. Soap residue will cling to the bottom and the sides of your machine just like your kitchen sink. A wipe about once a month will take care of the problem. If you use a liquid fabric softener in your machine, skip adding it when you wash darks. Fabric softener is another culprit. You have added enough softener when you washed the whites and brights so there is sufficient softener clinging to the sides of the machine when you do darks. Finally, check pockets carefully when you wash. Turn out deep pockets so that the lint in them can fall out in the wash cycle. This will prevent accidental washing of tissues and receipts which will leave lint on your clothes.

Why does the 2nd floor of my house shake when the washing machine spins?

It most likely shakes when it spins because when it washes, the load gets greater or heavier on one side. As a result, when it spins centrifugal force causes the heavier load to overcome the weight of the washer, causing it to spin.

Why do clothes get knotted up in washing machines?

The reason why clothes get knotted up in side washing machines is most washing machines have sort of flap around the doorway and if say a pant leg or a shirt sleeve gets caught in there it causes a domino affect, thus create a huge clothes knot in the washing machines

What would cause foul odor in bathroom when washing machine is draining?

Sounds to me like you have a clog in one of your pipes. This causes water from the washing machine to drain into other pipes instead of going down the main line properly. Check the bathtub when the washing machine is draining... they're notorious for filling with old yicky washing machine water! The clog can possibly be in a line ion the house, or possibly be caused by roots in the main line. Sounds like it's time to hire a plumber! Good luck!!

Why the agitation of a washing machine helps a detergent clean your clothes?

Soaps acts as an emulsion and surrounds the oil. This causes the droplets of oil to stay suspended in water. Agitation shifts most of the emulsion of grease and water off the clothes and into the washing machine. Rising clothes with clean water gets rid of any soap and grease that are left behind.

What can you put under your washer to cut down on the noise it makes?

First of all you need to be sure that the washer is properly stabilized. Instability causes the machine to vibrate more. Secondly you may try to place some rubber mats under the legs of the washer.
