Frictional force arises due to irregularities present on the surfaces in contact. Even if the surfaces in contact appear smooth to naked eye, but at microscopic level their unevenness is cleary visible. When two surfaces are in contact, the uppermost layer of atoms or molecules on the surfaces intercept eachother due to weak inter-molecular attractive forces and the normal reaction force. These forces give rise to frictional force which is also dependent on coefficient of friction.

The coefficient of friction mentioned in the other answer actually depends on the microscopic unevenness. More unevenness = higher coefficient of friction. The coefficient depends on the unevenness, not the other way around. The frictional force is really a surface average of how firmly these irregularities are forced to interact. A higher normal force causes more interaction and more resistance to sliding. We interpret this resistance to sliding as a frictional force.

How can friction be considered a force?

Friction is caused by force. If you move books across a table (a force) It causes friction. High friction is if the books move slowly, low friction is if the books move smoothly.

How does friction affect forward motion?

Friction is when two objects touch each other, either smooth or rough friction causes the object to slow down. Also an unbalanced force is when the net force isn't 0 which causes a object to move and cause friction other than a balanced force is when the net force is 0.

How is friction defined scientifically?

Friction is a force present when things rub against eachother. Friction causes heat energy, and it also causes motion between surfaces to be reduced.

Why is friction a force?

Friction is considered a force because it acts on an item and causes changes, which is what a force is. Nothing would happen if the item was in an area where friction was not possible or if friction was where an object was not since they need each other to exert external effort.
